categories
I really want to be able to break my blog down into an easy menu of categories clickable from the top menu. I haven't quite figured this out yet in blogger but I'm pretty sure there is a solution, maybe will have to play with the html It seems like anything in my post could be a tag or search result. Maybe adding a number to the category for easy googling. Am I making this too hard? not seeing another way offhand in blogger . So we'll call this blogging category 99823

The best beer I ever had
Portland,
Oregon
The
year was 1992. I was attending MLC in NW Portland and one day me and
a buddy took a tour of the Blitz Weinhard brewery on West Burnside.
It was like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the adolescent
male. The shining steel vats that held the malts dazzled our eyes. We
savored the pungent aroma of the hops as it assailed our nostrils.
All the secrets that went into the crafting of the delicious nectar
we loved were revealed! And then! Then, a creaking sound like some
mischievous yet benevolent banshee called out to us. We turned to see
two large oaken doors swing wide to reveal an inner sanctum. Into the
shadows we stared. Could it be? Yes it could! The friendly staff
beckoned us into the tasting room! The dark stain of the polished fir
bar adorned with brass rails hid the spoils of the room like a
pirate's chest overflowing with gold, but the treasure it offered was
golden hops tailored to a tasty perfection! We had our pick of brews
to sample. Henry's classic? Henry's Dark? What'll it be? Asked the
bartender. We answered in the manliest voices we could muster.......
Blitz, please.
We
may have entered the brewery that day as boys, but when the exit
doors opened onto West Burnside Street to reveal a rare glimpse of
pacific northwest sunshine, we did not squint. We did not shy away
from the light. We proudly strolled out those doors with our heads
held high. We emerged as men!

I'm not a catalyst I'm a catfish
cat·a·lyst
ˈkad(ə)ləst/
noun
- a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change.
- a person or thing that precipitates an event."the governor's speech acted as a catalyst for debate"
synonyms: stimulus, stimulation, spark, sparkplug, spur, incitement, impetus "the governor's speech was a catalyst for debate"
Sometimes after making a statement you realize that the opposite is true. Maybe we tell ourselves things sometimes that are not true to convince ourselves that they are.
I don't think I'm a catalyst because even though I may want to change things I will also be changed by my experience. A catalyst, in a chemical sense, isn't.
Maybe I'm more of a catfish. Catfish has taken on a new definition because of the movie catfish that came out in 2010 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catfish_(film)
SPOILER ALERT. please go watch this movie it's good.
the definition has become someone who misrepresents themselves online or uses fake profiles to mess with people. If you watch the movie, that's not really what it says.
The definition comes from a story in the movie (on wiki page) Vince, relays a story of how when live cod were shipped to Asia from North America, the fish's inactivity in their tanks resulted in only mushy flesh reaching the destination. However, fishermen found that putting catfish in the tanks with the cod kept them active, and thus ensured the quality of the fish.
This is the definition I like better. Basically someone who stirs shit up.
So I'm not a catalyst, I'm a catfish.

New banner, gimp photoshop
Trying to teach myself gimp (kind of like adobe photoshop but it's free and works on Linux). Been using MS Paint for years but trying to branch out. Gimp is a lot more complicated. You can do a lot more with it, but it's not the most intuitive to learn. Took me hours to do this banner. But I learned a lot. Hopefully it'll get easier as I go.

The concept
I've had an idea for a blog for a while. To talk about the Pacific Northwest as a whole instead of just making a Portland or Seattle blog. I feel like the Pacific Northwest is not just a great place to live, it's an incubator for great things, progressive thought, and inventive ideas. I would include Northern Cali, British Columbia Canada, and Alaska as part of my Pac NW.
Some of the great things about the Pac NW: We seem to be figuring out health care better than the rest of you. Oregon and California are known to have good Health Plans (I"m talking pre obamacare, which I'm not sure has helped.)
We seem to be figuring out the marijuana thing faster than some other states.
We seem to be ahead of the curve on same sex marriage and tolerance in general.
I'm not saying the Pacific Northwest is perfect, far from it, but it's a pretty great part of the country that needs to have a voice equal to that of the East coast cities and / or Southern California. Maybe this blog/website can be part of that voice.
We need to make sure the NW stays a great place and keeps getting better. There are a lot of people moving here, we need to teach them to drive a little slower and road rage a bit less and relax! You are not in Baltimore or LA anymore, chill! Our speed limit in Oregon is 10 mph as a rule lower than elsewhere.
I'm personally from Texas but raised in Portland Oregon. I am not a transplant, climate refugee or a victim of human sex trafficking. My name is R.J. Weller and I'm a blogaholic. CATEGORY/TAGS blogging 99823

XL Banner
started messing with a bigger banner for sometimes when it gets cropped posting as facebook background or twitter/instagram I still want it legible. It started looking pretty cool but I might just be getting overly obsessed at this point.

Writing Exercise: Captions
Write at least a line or up to a page caption for one of the following from the New Yorker. Even though this one is short, it was one of my favorite exercises from my college writing class at Portland State. Name of Portland strip club changed to protect the not so innocent.
Acapulco was a lot nicer place back in the early 2000s. Nowadays you were lucky if you got a fried fish that hadn't been stepped on. And you could just forget about ordering a steak.
In the year 2014, blaming the recession, the management put the dancers in charge of the kitchen and things went downhill quickly from there.
One night a girl from Reed brought her cello to work to protest the working conditions. Between performances, she complained about the lack of healthcare and a guaranteed minimum wage. As the night wore on, I started getting a bit tipsy so I don't remember it all but I'm pretty sure she mentioned human sex trafficking, the rising costs of student loans and housing, and climate refugees. After drinking a fifth of tequila and my fifth beer, I blacked out during her performance of Beethoven's fifth.
I came to in the back parking lot, freezing my ass off and it was starting to rain. I stood up and looked at my reflection in the window. Shit. My eyes were blackened and my nose broken. I reached into my pocket for my phone. It was gone. Figures. That cello playing bitch probably took it.
"FUUUUUCK!" I yelled out, looking for a rock to throw through the window. A train roared by from down by the yards. I fantasized about what it would be like to throw myself down in front of it, letting the steel wheels slice me in two like a Christmas ham. That'd be a cool way to die.
I wanted to call the cops and tell them I was robbed and assaulted. I wanted to punch somebody in the face. But who would they believe really, a drunk guy or the bouncer?
As the train's whistle died down so did my rage. Calling the cops wouldn't help anyways. They'd probably just laugh at my drunk ass. I resigned myself to a long walk home in the cold rain. It would give me plenty of time to come up with a story to tell my mom when I got home.
Post press conference phone call from Dan Snyder's office:
"Look Dan, times have changed. You can't just go around calling people Redskins anymore. Do you call anybody a blackskin, yellowskin, or whiteskin? Hell no!. What? You wore a cowboy hat to the press conference? That's it, I quit! find yourself another PR man!"
"Kia said he comes with the car and they have a strict no returns policy. PETA protesters have surrounded the house, and your mother wants to know if she's gonna have to watch the kids this weekend."
"Eye told you unicorns were real."
(look close and you can see the people only have on eye.)
